If you froze time in the middle of a good game night, what would you see?
Not just cardboard and plastic. You’d see tension right before a dice roll. Silent bargaining over a trade. Someone trying to look confident while they absolutely are not. A whole story compressed into a table.
The Story Never Dice is the tabletop realm of The Weave. We care about every kind of game played on a table—TTRPGs, board games, card games, dice games, strategy nights, party chaos—and what happens to people when they play them.
This isn’t about min-maxing the perfect build or owning every expansion (though we respect the dedication). It’s about turning game nights into stories you remember.
Why this realm exists
Tabletop games are often treated as either:
- a niche hobby with a vocabulary that scares newcomers, or
- “just” entertainment, a way to fill an evening.
We think they’re more than that.
Around a table, people learn to:
- negotiate and cooperate
- read each other’s faces and moods
- cope with losing
- make decisions under uncertain odds
- tell stories together in real time
The Story Never Dice exists to shine a light on those hidden skills and to help you design game nights that are fun and meaningful—without turning the evening into homework.
What you’ll find here
- Story-driven game guides
We’ll talk about games in terms of: - what kind of story they create
- what social skills they invite
- what kind of group they suit best
You’ll still get rules, tweaks and tips, but always in service of a better story at the table.
- Playthroughs and table diaries
Think of these as after-action reports told like episodes: - the time a quiet player became the unexpected villain
- the alliance that should never have been trusted
- the session where everything broke and it was still the best memory
- Tools for GMs, hosts and parents
Whether you’re running a TTRPG campaign, hosting a board game evening, or using games with your children, you’ll find: - one-session story structures
- safety tools and consent check-ins
- ways to bring shy players into the spotlight
- ideas for using games to support learning (with Learning Horizons) or family connection (with The Parenting Saga)
A place for newcomers and veterans
We’re deliberately building this realm without gatekeeping.
If you’ve never rolled a d20 before, you’re welcome. If you have shelves of games sorted by mechanism, you’re also welcome—just expect us to ask what stories your shelves hold.
You’ll see explanations of jargon in plain language, examples that don’t assume prior knowledge, and gentle suggestions rather than “you must play like this”.
How to join the game
If you’re new, start with any article labelled “First Steps” or “Gateway Games”. We’ll walk you through choosing a game that fits your group, rather than the Internet’s idea of what you “should” be playing.
If you’re an experienced GM or host, jump into pieces about campaign arcs, player types and table culture. Borrow whatever helps you craft more satisfying stories.
And if you just enjoy living vicariously through others’ dice catastrophes, you’ll find plenty of those in The Roll, our tabletop newsletter.
Whatever you play, and however you play it, The Story Never Dice is here to remind you of one simple thing:
If it sits on a table and brings people together, it’s not just a game. It’s a tale waiting to be told.
